"oh yah, so-and-so's going to be there too"

"hmm who?"

"you don't know who that is? where have u been? how can you possibly not know?? he's super high profile and blah blah blah. GO FIND OUT"

this is so full of rubbish. i felt like retorting "yeah, apparently not high profile enough for EVERYONE to know him" but that would just be silly as well. not that high profile guy's fault rite? haha.. it's just annoying that if someone is known to be a smart high-flyer, everyone else is supposed to know him/her and if you don't know, you jolly well go find out and not make a fool of yourself with your ignorance.

so our street cred is tied to the number of buzz words we can drop, and the number of hotshot names we can possibly acquaint ourselves to? yeah, i don't deny it, cos that does happen, just like anyone who says "i love before sunrise/before sunset/pride and prejudice/the motorcycle diaries" will suddenly catch my attention (not that catching my attention necessarily ranks high on their priority list haha).

the big BUT comes in at the question of why one must go find out who that person is, just cos that person's well known. isnt that cyclical and self serving? maybe he/she isnt so known but cos people find out, then he/she really becomes known. If you'll end up meeting the person, then yes you'll find out who that person is, and hopefully realise why he/she is so talked about and appreciate that person's qualities. To go seek that person out just to boost street cred and increase the repertiore of who's-who names to drop is just plain silly. It's akin to wanting to know someone just cos his/her gpa is really high or cos they are really gorgeous looking. Do the grades and looks diffuse from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration through a 'hi' or handshake?

perhaps when it comes to the equation of knowing someone, variables like personality, character, opinions and values have been pushed into the second spot by the variable called TION (the importance of networking).
